Blocked drains can be caused by a variety of factors including:
Drainpipes can become congested through a build up of items like hair, food waste and soap. Initially this may only slightly affect water flow but over time they will become blocked. In the bathroom this may occur due to the flushing of excess toilet paper and sanitary products down the toilet. Regardless of the location, allowing these minor blockages to remain untreated may result in greater hassles and expense in the future.
Rain or Storms
During heavy storms drains often become blocked due to the increased volume of water. Drains are generally not designed for this increase and the likelihood of blockages increases dramatically. They are capable of dealing with your regular usage but extreme weather puts them under increased pressure. Outdoor drains are susceptible to a buildup of debris during heavy rain or storms. Leaves, dirt and rubbish can collect and cause the drains to block. If unattended these blockages can lead to flooding and property damage.
Broken pipes can occur due to intrusions (by tree roots), poor installation, building work, shifting soil and general wear and tear. Regardless of the cause, broken pipes can disruptive and costly depending on their location. Drain cameras can be used to determine the exact location of the breakage from above ground and reduce the need to replace the entire drain. Depending on the extent of the blockage/damage this may still have to occur.
The recent explosion of DIY culture has been met by the increase in incorrectly installed plumbing and draining pipes. The initial savings of DIY are offset by the longer term repair costs. Incorrect installation can result in misalignment or complete collapse. Not only are these causes of blocked drains but also very costly mistakes. They have the potential to cause damage to not only your own but also your neighbours' properties.
